A career with us

We are always looking to recruit qualified chartered accountants, with or without forensic experience.

Our philosophy

Our reputation is based on the quality of our people so we take the recruitment and development of our staff very seriously. We are not encumbered by the wider relationships of a large accounting firm, so we can act quickly and flexibly, meeting the needs of our clients and their legal representatives as well as our team.

We aim to produce high quality work, presented clearly and concisely, backed up by consistent analysis and expertise – and to enjoy doing it.

We are different from conventional accounting firms

We are independent, with none of the restrictions created by the wider client relationships found in a large firm. That allows us to offer honest, objective advice, untainted by wider business relationships.

We are a co-operative and supportive team, where your opinion will always be valued. No two cases are alike, so sharing past experiences and listening to the opinions of all members of the team is invaluable in producing the best result.

Being part of a small team will give you greater exposure to clients and their lawyers, as well as to all elements of the dispute process, from initial discussions to assessment of loss and on to final resolution.

We have simple and efficient systems – without excessive bureaucracy.

We offer you:

  • great clients and cases – our clients come from all parts of the world and operate in lots of different industry sectors (for example, mining, alcoholic drinks, textiles)
  • a highly skilled and experienced team who are committed, motivated and enjoy their work
  • flexible working conditions and the opportunity to balance work and home life to suit your personal circumstances
  • plenty of learning opportunities – formal, through targeted training, and informal, through on-the-job coaching – we want you to achieve your potential
  • support to expand and develop your professional network
  • scope for progression – we aim for organic growth and are actively seeking to create opportunities for progression, including to partnership
  • a competitive salary, with generous benefits and a discretionary bonus.

For all positions, you need to be a chartered accountant (qualified with any institute) with a good degree (first or upper second) in any subject, and good A levels.

  • To become an Associate, previous forensic accounting experience is not required, but you need to have a keen interest in the field. Big-4 training or audit experience is helpful but by no means essential.
  • As a Senior Associate, you will have two years or more forensic accountancy experience (post qualification), ideally working on commercial disputes in areas such as quantification of loss or breach of accounts warranty, and with experience of drafting expert witness reports for litigation or arbitration. You will also have experience of building or working on discounted cash flow models.
  • To join us as a Director, you need extensive experience in accounting and quantum aspects of disputes, and a network of lawyer contacts. Previous appointment as an expert witness is desirable but not essential.

Skills and personality:

  • We are looking for people with intellectual rigour and great analytical skills, who can handle detailed work accurately, but also consider the bigger picture and the commercial aspects of a business.
  • You need to be good at building and sustaining working relationships with clients and their lawyers, which means you’ll be sociable and make an impact.
  • Our people are adaptable and can deal with the uncertainty inherent in our work. They are tenacious, and will not let a problem go without an answer, and can use their initiative to come up with solutions to issues independently.
  • We need you to be a great communicator who can draft a persuasive and well-reasoned argument.
  • We are committed and motivated to work hard when required, but we also have fun doing it.

If you want to specialise in dispute services, joining Haberman Ilett LLP is a great career move. Email careers@hiforensic.com with your CV and a covering letter telling us why you are applying and what you can bring to us.

Our recruitment process is then fast but thorough.

If your application meets our requirements, you can expect to be invited in to our office for a 2-3 hour assessment process, including:

  • a written case study based on a real case, to test your analytical and written communication skills;
  • an interview, including an oral presentation of your findings on the case study and a discussion around your experience and skills;
  • a chance to meet more of our team, over coffee or lunch, where we can answer your questions about us.

You may then be required to take the Watson Glaser test, an online test which can be carried out in your own time. This takes 30 minutes and tests critical reasoning skills, an essential component of our work. You will hear whether your application has been successful within a few days.
